Scioscia says Loux has spot in Triple-A

Choice ultimately lies with recently designated right-hander

08/26/09 3:40 PM ET

ANAHEIM -- Angels manager Mike Scioscia said on Wednesday that the organization is open to bringing back right-hander Shane Loux, who was designated for assignment after Tuesday night's game to make room for Wednesday starter Joe Saunders.

But Scioscia said the decision is ultimately up to Loux, as he could be claimed off waivers by another team with the Angels having 10 days to assign him to the Minor Leagues, trade him or release him.

"He has the right to decide," Scioscia said. "If he wants to go down to Triple-A and pitch, there's definitely a spot for him. Shane's got to sort some things out and see if there are any opportunities for him."

For now, Loux isn't allowed to tell the Angels if he'd like the return.

"He can't tell you for 24 hours," Scioscia said. "And he has to go through waivers, but he can't say if he'll go down for 24 hours."

Loux was a pleasant surprise in Spring Training, posting a 4.58 ERA in six appearances, four starts, and was able to earn a spot in the rotation in the wake of injuries to Ervin Santana and John Lackey to open the season.

In six starts to open the season, Loux was 3-3 with a 4.64 ERA, but he was relegated to the bullpen before going on the disabled list in mid-May with right shoulder inflammation.

Loux, though, struggled after returning on July 21, as he had a 6.75 ERA in 10 appearances before being designated on Tuesday.

Scioscia said they made the move because Loux needs to work on some things in the Minors and was out of options.

"If you grade out his stuff, it grades out fine," Scioscia said. "But his ability to repeat pitches and get contact on his terms has been a struggle for him. He's worked very hard on some things, but at times, he's made some progress, and sometimes it hasn't gone the way it needs to."
