Shields lands on 15-day disabled list
Angels righty no longer able to pitch through knee pain

ANAHEIM -- Making a move they considered before the start of this week's series against the Chicago White Sox, the Angels after Tuesday's 4-2 loss put reliever Scot Shields on the 15-day disabled list. Shields left Tuesday night's game against the White Sox after only recording one out and was diagnosed with patella tendinitis in his left knee. "All I could think about when I was facing the hitters tonight was how much pain I was in," Shields said. "It just hurt the whole time." Angels manager Mike Scioscia said he first noticed Shields' pain when the righty covered first on a Jermaine Dye groundout to first baseman Kendry Morales. "We have really been trying to manage his pitches well," Scioscia said, "but it has really been a hit-or-miss thing with him, and it is starting to affect his delivery." Shields has struggled much of the first part of the season, with an ERA of 6.62 in 20 games. Scioscia and Shields are both hoping that after a few weeks the discomfort will subside and he can resume his role in the bullpen. In the meantime, the Angels are calling up right-handed reliever Rich Thompson from Triple-A Salt Lake. He has a 2.70 ERA in three appearances with the Bees this season. "It doesn't feel good and enough is enough," Shields said. "I just want to be able to be there for my teammates." Scioscia knows for a player like Shields how rough an injury like this can be. "He is a tough kid," Scioscia said. "He doesn't give in and is truly mentally or physically tough."Quinn Roberts is an associate reporter for MLB.com.
